On Monday, I had the honor of photographing the birth of Baby William Fox. Diana and Lane approached me several months ago about photographing their son’s Cesarean birth. I have witnessed births before, but never a C-section. It is fairly rare for photographers to be allowed into an operating room, so Diana began working with her obstetrician and the hospital well in advance to be sure there would be no issues on the big day. It turns out, it all comes down to the anesthesiologist. Thirty minutes before surgery, we still didn’t know if I would be allowed in! Luckily, the anesthesiologist didn’t hesitate to say yes, and I was able to join mom and dad in the OR.
In a sunny and calm (100% female-staffed!) OR, little Fox made a smooth entrance into the world at 8:56am. He showed off his lungs within a few seconds and he was skin to skin with Diana in minutes. The doctors and nurses were very accommodating to Diana and Lane’s wishes for their birth experience, and to me, as I tried to document the day.
I am very grateful for the opportunity to be present for this beautiful birth, and for the moment when Fox met his big sister, Magnolia.
